A pretty funny post about redesigning the usa.gov site. Though, contrary to some design “professionals” that I usually trust, I don’t think it makes the author sound like “an ignorant cunt”.

Speaking of which, when did voting for Obama become a prerequisite for being a web developer? Last time I checked, all you needed was a text editor. All I know is that I’m getting pretty fucking sick of reading about how stupid my values are when all I’m trying to do is stay up to date with news in the industry.

Come and shop with me this weekend!

diyfaircard.jpg

Handmade Detroit and Reware Vintage have a very busy weekend planned, and I’ve made over 50 new record notebooks for it!

Handmade Detroit will be at the DIY Street Fair in Ferndale this Saturday September 20th and Sunday September 21st selling our members and friends crafty goodies, as well as Handmade Detroit T shirts, mitten pins and magnets to raise money for the upcoming Detroit Urban Craft Fair. Reware Vintage will be selling record notebooks and record earrings at the DIY Street Fair both days!

From the DIY Street Fair site:

“This free 2-day event invites artists, hand-made crafters, local and national businesses, non-profit groups and organizations, musicians, local restaurants, michigan brewers and others who live and work with a DIY (that’s, “do it yourself”) ethic.

Highlights include: a main stage featuring live performances by 30 original bands; a beer garden where guests can sit, relax and enjoy beverages from michigan-based breweries and culinary crafts from local restaurants; street performances, artist / vendor demos; and for the kids… hands-on, do-it-yourself crafts workshops, and entertainment.”paf.jpg

Handmade Detroit will also be at the People’s Art Festival this Sunday, September 13th at the Russell Industrial Center in Detroit this Sunday September 21st!

Phantom Limb, Make-Out Goods, Lish Magic and Reware Vintage will be set up in the Handmade Detroit tents all day at PAF, selling our crafts. We will also be selling Handmade Detroit T shirts, mitten pins and magnets to raise money for the upcoming Detroit Urban Craft Fair.

The People’s Art Festival will be from 11am-10pm and will feature over 100 artists and crafters!

Hope to see you this weekend!

Weekend Lessons

This weekend it rained pretty much for 48 hours straight here in Michigan. The rain postponed the festival that Reware Vintage was supposed to be at with Handmade Detroit, the People’s Art Festival, so I had an entire weekend with nothing to do (and nothing to do outside).

Friday night Lish and I went to the Fillmore Detroit open house to promote Handmade Detroit and our upcoming Detroit Urban Craft Fair at the Fillmore. The Fillmore were great hosts, and we enjoyed some free drinks and food while pimping ourselves out and being very crafty productive. Then we checked out the new Woodbridge Pub and got some really excellent grub.

The rest of the weekend consisted of Dan and I pretty much doing nothing but bumming around the house, interrupted by spurts of random productiveness.

Weekend lessons:

- Dr. Mario is available for the Wii now! Oh yeah!!!

- Make curtains right the first time around. Then you don’t need to go back and fix them after years of procrastinating.

- Grass gets exceptionally green after a weekend of rain

- I make a mean meatloaf. Seriously.

- Need to go to the Woodbridge Pub again and get another burger. It was soooo good!

A great song, and, without a doubt, the greatest “anti-video”-video of all time.

Weekend lessons

Dan went away camping with Pat and Jeff last weekend, so I had the whole house to myself (besides Kona). I wasn’t able to hold myself to my “no working on the weekends” policy; I needed to make more record notebooks to send to Tokyo, but I still had a lot of fun.

Saturday I went to the Oakland County Farmers market and got some flowers, veggies and a pint of amazing raspberries, then went to the Dixieland Flea Market to hunt for records. I met Crissy for coffee and conversation for a couple hours in Davison and stopped at an estate sale on the way home where I found some amazing stuff. I made notebooks for a couple hours, then I proceeded to eat an entire pint of raspberries while watching “Amelie” (which I’ve wanted to see for YEARS).

Sunday Kona and I had a disagreement over whether or not it is a good idea to dig holes in the backyard, but we were able to reconcile our differences later in the day playing fetch. I made even more notebooks, then watched Monty Python episodes for a couple hours. I filled the rest of the day with uninteresting chores and watched the Olympic closing ceremonies with Dan when he got home.

Weekend lessons:

-Those traveling gnome commercials for whatever-website-that-is make more sense after watching “Amelie”

-BBC America is now definitely my new favorite channel

-70’s and 80’s R&B and rap records are frustratingly difficult to find

-Pontiac used to be called Yak-town?

-French films are good (sometimes)

-Kona loves raspberries too

“As an engineer, nothing infuriates me more than hearing a designer talk about something as “an engineering problem”. You absolute bastard. Why are you designing something that you aren’t even sure will work? Why bother opening Photoshop if what you’re producing is little more than a fantasy-world mockup?”

A great article about how designers and coders work together.
