Mighty Mighty Reunion
Live Bosstones shows (especially in the pre-frat boy yelling “play Knock on Wood!” era) have always been a special occasion. It’s tough to explain how great the early shows were to people that just know them as another late 90’s fad ska band, but they really were something special. I haven’t missed a Detroit area Bosstones show since 1993, so obviously I was beyond excited when they announced their reunion tour after a six year hiatus. Finding out that their reunion tour would be spent opening for the bland, psuedo-Irish, oi also-rans, the Dropkick Murphys was, to say the least, disappointing.
But, given the conditions, the boys played a great set, and it made me feel like a kid again to see them back in plaid! Here’s hoping for a headlining club tour later this year!
Robbie Badd Gets Married
There are only a handful of people that I’d drive 1200 miles in a weekend to be at their wedding. Robbie Badd is definitely on that short list. Beth and I left Pontiac early Friday morning, arriving in Houghton/Hancock late Friday evening, only to turn around and make the 11-hour drive home on Sunday morning. It was a busy weekend, without many opportunities for sightseeing on Beth’s first trip to the western U.P., but, in every single way, it was worth going.
Rob and Katie’s wedding ceremony was at her parents’ house on the shore of Lake Superior (which was way more beautiful than it sounds) with a short reception and drinks at the bar afterward. “Bridgefest” was in full swing back in Houghton, with fireworks and a cover band playing Jackyl (seriously) to cap off Saturday night.
It was great to see Rob (a good friend that I don’t see nearly enough of) and to be there for his big day. Congratulations!
The Breeders @ the Magic Stick
Beth and I went to see the Breeders earlier this week and, as promised, it was a great show. Even though they’ve been around for nearly 15 years (jeez, am I getting that old?), they still deliver. Their new songs, while not quite as good as the classics, are still better than most of the B.S. today’s kids are into. (Shit. I am getting old.)
In addition to the Divine Hammer video above, I also took videos of (my personal favorite) No Aloha, New Year and Cannonball (just by random chance, all off of Last Splash) and some photos of the evening.
The Nixon Summer Concert Series is just getting started!
You Can’t Stop the Rock
In high school and college, we used to go to shows on a weekly basis. I was even in a band and ran a record label for years, and used to play a few times a month, but it’s been a long time since there’s been a show that I’ve been really excited for, let alone several. For the first time in years, this summer, there’s a ton of shows that Beth and I are going to.
So, create a new Google Calendar category labeled “Hard Jams”, and take this down:
- Blood on the Wall (May 22)
- Kids in the Hall (May 30)
- The Breeders (June 1)
- Mudhoney (June 2)
- Mighty Mighty Bosstones (July 8)
- No Age (July 17)
- Rancid (August 1)
- The Go! Team (August 2)
Green Street Fair
Thanks to all of the participants who came out the Michigan’s first Swap-O-Rama-Rama last weekend at the Green Street Fair in Plymouth! We had a fantastic time sewing with everyone and making so many great projects (Tote bags were the overall crowd favorite!).
Thanks to everyone who donated clothing and material for us to use, and a big thank you to Janome for loaning us sewing machines for the weekend!
Thanks also to all of the fantastic vendors at the Rethunk booth - you showed everyone so many ways to be a “green crafter”!
And last but not least, a humongous thank you to all of the Swap-O-Rama-Rama volunteers - we couldn’t have done it without you!

The vendors were awesome, the crowd was phenomenal, and the bands were super entertaining! Fox 2 news covered the evening and Dan took lots of pictures while I was slinging drinks.

Eclipse
You can go anywhere to find high quality video or photos of the 02/08 lunar eclipse. This is the only place that you can hear all of the ridiculous conversations the dudes and I were having while I was taping this rare celestial event.

It always turns into conversations about guns at some point, right?

Congratulations to all involved for another successful Handmade Detroit Holiday Market! Beth and I had a blast (and here’s the pictures to prove it).
A DIY wedding
On Friday night my best friend Monica got married. She and I have known each other almost our entire lives (we met in kindergarten), and I always knew she was a crafty girl in a crafty family, but I never expected Monica and her husband Mark to have a truly DIY (and really beautiful!) wedding with a little help from their friends. The favors, centerpieces for the reception, decorations for the church, flower girl baskets, and the bridal party bouquets were all handmade by Monica and her friend Julie - but they looked like Martha Stewart had made them herself!
Dan and I had a great time, and I was honored to be a member of the bridal party. Congratulations and best wishes to Mark and Monica and the whole M&M family!!!
