Well, after a long buying trip on Thursday, I was wiped out for the holiday weekend. Dan and I had a date night, went to an awesome show at the Magic Stick with Mark, and put in some work on the house and the new RewareVintage.com (re-launching in a few weeks, and let me tell you – IT IS AWESOME!).
Since I don’t have any pictures from the weekend, here’s a series of pictures from our trip…of me in bathrooms. No, not doing anything dirty! Just me in wonder of some really odd public restrooms.
Rest Stop in Ohio. Loved the green walls!
A restaurant in D.C. required you to get a token from your waitress to use the restroom.
What must have been the dirtiest bathroom in all of Pennsylvania.
Loved the painted walls at Betty’s in Columbus!
A few other really exciting things that have happened over the past few weeks that I haven’t had time to blog about:
A great blog post by Amy Schroeder featuring all the ladies from Etsy’s “Crafty Blogging” panel
Detroit Urban Craft Fair applications are open until September 24th! This is our 5 year anniversary DUCF, and believe me, it’s gonna be one hell of a party!
One of my Record Notebooks was included in this Disco themed Etsy Treasury
One of my favorite customers, Genevieve in Seattle, and her husband Leif had their baby! Congratulations Gen and Leif, and welcome to the world, Peter!

Second half smoke of the day
Jealous… My favorite part of our stop in D.C. a couple weeks ago.

Our last stop on the road trip was Pittsburgh, and it was my first visit there!
Dan really loved checking out all the bridges (one of his favorite obsessions)
I LOVED the Andy Warhol Museum
We had a great time checking out the Society of Contemporary Craft (thanks to reader Rachele for the suggestion!)
Recycled Traffic Signage by Boris Bally
Pottery by Steven Cheek
and Sharon and Kate there told us all about their upcoming exhibit – DIY: A Revolution in Handicrafts (opens Sept 10th) We even got to look at promotional materials before they went off to print!
I totally sense a field trip coming up for this!
and we did more crafty shopping at Wildcard, an awesomely curated shop with an impressive selection of (well, everything, but especially) cards and gift wrap!
Sunday morning was time to hit the road, but we made one more stop before heading back to Michigan – to the Evans City Cemetary. I know, this sounds weird, but this is the cemetery where they filmed Night of the Living Dead!
This actually was Dan’s idea – a surprise that he waited to tell me about until we were driving to Pennsylvania. My husband (who is totally not a fan of horror movies) did his research and mapped it out for us, so that I could see it. I’ve been a huge fan of the Living Dead movies since I was just a little kid, and it was really exciting to me to go to the graveyard. My husband is THE BEST!
We roamed around and recreated some of the scenes with our camera.
It was the best time I’ve ever had in a cemetery.
The drive home was long, but we were happy to be back in Michigan again after 9 days away!

Kelley Deal’s Amplified sewing machine
…here’s a snapshot of Kelley making amplified sewing machine sounds. (Related tangent: This is the sewing machine listed as an instrument on the track “S.O.S.” from Last Splash, which was later sampled by The Prodigy on “Firestarter“.)(The guitar in the background was a gift from Kurt Cobain.)
Next stop (and my favorite part) of the road trip, was to Nag’s Head, in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
It was beautiful! Our hotel was right on the beach, a 1 minute walk out to the ocean. It was relaxing, fun and so incredible!
We spent a lot of time just relaxing on the beach and swimming in the ocean (a bit too much time, as we both got sunburned!)
and ate (gorged?) the best fresh seafood.
played a little putt-putt
and had a photo opp with a mirrored pegasus, just for Lish!
I even got to do a little thrifting and antiquing (those pics coming up on tomorrow’s Lost and Found!)
It was fantastic, and makes me want to visit the beaches here in Michigan so much more often. Beach vacations down the street for sure while it’s still warm here in the Mitten!

We had a really fantastic vacation, and I have so many photos from the trip I want to share, so I gotta break all this down into a bunch of posts!
We spent our first night in Columbus, and our first stop there of course was to Wholly Craft! Wholly Craft is one of my favorite stores ANYWHERE, and I was so glad we got to stop in!
There’s my Record Notebooks!
We bought a couple gifts for friends, Dan got a new wallet and I got a new T shirt. After a yummy dinner at Betty’s, we had drinks with Olivera at Surly Girl Saloon and some great crafty conversation. I so wish Columbus was a shorter drive, I LOVE the girls we know and the scene there!
The next morning we headed out to Washington DC, and were so excited to see the city for the first time.
Susan and Eric showed us around town that night, and we bar hopped all around town. The perfect end to the evening – eating at the famous Ben’s Chili Bowl (this was on the top of the list after seeing Anthony Bordain’s visit there)
Yes, it was the best chili dog I’ve ever had!
We visited the White House, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and the Reflection Pool.
and had a wonderful time at the Smithsonian Museums.
I especially loved the First Ladies exhibit – so many wonderful dresses!
We marveled at the design of their subway system
but not so much the wait times
had a lovely dinner and drinks at Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe
and LOVED their Eastern Market, where I got to meet a T shirt designer who we own a bunch of shirts from!
For more pics from our trip, check out our Flickr set! Next post coming up – Outer Banks, North Carolina!
